What are the advantages of a fire steel?
A fire steel is a fire starter that requires neither gas nor liquid fuel - just a little old-fashioned manual labor and patience!
The principle is the same as when people once struck two stones together to get a spark to start a fire with.
This then evolved into a stone and, precisely - a steel!
Today's fire steels follow the same principle, but the materials have been upgraded and the steel is usually a magnesium rod.
This is scraped against either a striker, a knife spine, or another surface that, through friction, casts sparks to get your fire going.
What are the disadvantages of a fire steel?
Fire steels have the slight disadvantage that they require a little practice to master. But once you have mastered the technique, it is clearly superior as the fire steel works in all weathers and temperatures.
