FLASHLIGHTS
A good flashlight is an absolute essential cornerstone for a functional EDC and good emergency preparedness! You never know when a power outage or an accident might strike – that's when it's crucial to have a working light source close at hand. We recommend carrying AT LEAST ONE, but preferably two, flashlights when you leave home. A small one on your keyring, always close and ready, and a larger one in your jacket, bag, or car. A primary and a backup is definitely what you should aim for.
Different Needs – Different Flashlights
Depending on where you are and what you're doing, there are lights for various uses. There are small lights that illuminate a small area, others shine very brightly and far. There are tactical lights with built-in glass breakers and strobe functions – flashing lights that attract attention and can be used to blind an attacker. There are lights with built-in batteries, lights with built-in chargers but replaceable batteries, and regular lights without a lot of features.
Biggest Isn't Always Best
A really strong light is always fun, but you shouldn't get fixated on high lumens in all situations. There are significant advantages to slightly weaker flashlights that use non-rechargeable batteries. If you don't have access to charging, it's good to have a light that runs on standard AA, AAA, or CR123 batteries. A very strong light draws a lot of power and can get very hot – something to consider in environments with an elevated fire risk.
Headlamps Provide Freedom of Movement
A headlamp is not a bad idea to have in your car or in your emergency preparedness kit. With a headlamp, both hands are free, allowing you to work unhindered with the light directed at what you're doing. Unbeatable when you need to read, change fuses in the fuse box, or crawl into tight spaces.
Battery-Powered Lantern
A battery-powered lantern is a wise investment for your emergency preparedness! The lantern also works perfectly for balcony chilling, camping, and as mood lighting. No danger of spilling flammable liquids or soot – but with the same light distribution (if not better) than a traditional lantern.
