FIXED BLADE KNIVES
The original type of knife is the fixed blade. From the sharpening of stones until now, much has happened with fixed blade knives – but the principle remains the same: a sharp edge that can be held in the hand!
What are the advantages of fixed blade knives?
A fixed blade knife is the strongest type of knife as it is in one piece without any moving parts. The longer the part of the knife that is connected, the better. When the knife blade goes all the way through the handle – and sometimes even extends a bit – it is called a full tang knife. There is no risk of the knife blade accidentally folding up and injuring the user, a small but significant risk compared to a folding knife.
What are the disadvantages of a fixed blade knife?
The disadvantages are not particularly large or numerous – it's more a matter of taste and preference. Fixed blade knives are generally not very pocket-friendly and take up more space than a folding knife. Since it has no built-in edge protection, it needs a sheath/scabbard.
However, the sheath has the advantage that it can be adapted to one's needs – for example, it can be equipped with a fire steel. It can also be hung on a belt or attached to a bag.
